The first case of bird flu found in a flock of commercial poultry in Manitoba
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has identified the first case of bird flu in Manitoba in a herd of commercial poultry and the third case overall.
A federal agency detected the first case of the highly pathogenic avian influenza strain H5N1 on a local farm in Whitemas, east of Winnipeg, on Saturday, the state said in a news release the following day.

Bird flu “has spread to wild bird populations around the world and has shown significant national concern as birds travel to Canada,” the CFIA said in a state update on its website.
On Wednesday, the state said samples from snow geese and bald eagles were tested for the virus and returned positive.
Snow goose samples were collected in southwestern Manitoba and bald eagle samples were collected near Dauphin, Manitoba Natural Resources and Northern Development said in a news release at the time.
