Middlesex County reported 3,786 additional COVID-19 cases last week
The number of new COVID-19 cases, both in the middle sex county and throughout the state, eased last week after a sharp increase in the weeks.
According to USA TODAY network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data, Middlesex County reported 3,786 cases in the week ending Sunday, a decrease of nearly 3% from a total of 3,902 new cases last week. Nine coronavirus-related deaths were reported last week, up from six last week.
Through a pandemic, Middlesex County reported 335,583 cases and 3,970 deaths.
Across the state, the number of new cases of coronavirus last week was 13,862, a 4.2% decrease from 14,469 reported the previous week. Last week, 46 people died from COVID-19 in Massachusetts, up from 33 last week.
Neighboring counties also reported a decrease in the number of cases.
The total number of new cases in Worcester County was 1,110 last week, down 13.3% from the 1,280 cases reported last week. Two people died last week, down from four last week.
Norfolk County reported 1,312 cases last week, a 4.6% reduction from the 1,375 new cases reported last week. Seven people died in the county last week, up from five last week.
Throughout Massachusetts, cases declined in six counties, with the sharpest decline in three regional counties: Worcester, Middlesex, and Norfolk.

Massachusetts is the second largest in the country in terms of the proportion of people who have been vaccinated at least once, and 98% of the population is at least partially vaccinated. The national percentage is 77.5%, as shown by USA TODAY analysis of CDC data. The most used Pfizer and Moderna vaccines in the United States should be given twice at intervals of several weeks.
Massachusetts reported 89,640 vaccinations during the week ending Sunday, including 14,913 initial doses. Last week, the state received 107,109 vaccinations, including 15,749 initial doses. In total, Massachusetts reported that it administered a total dose of over 14.7 million.
Within Massachusetts, the worst weekly outbreak per person is Berkshire County, with 291 cases per 100,000 people per week. Suffolk County (280); Hampshire County (251). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, high-level community infections start at 100 per 100,000 people per week.
According to data from Johns Hopkins University, a total of 1,738,231 people have been coronavirus-positive and 20,222 have died from the disease in Massachusetts since the outbreak of the pandemic. Approximately 81 million people are positive and 991,254 have died nationwide.

Massachusetts COVID-19 hospitalization increased

Hospitals in 37 states reported having more COVID-19 patients than last week, while hospitals in 25 states had more COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit. Hospitals in 42 states admitted more COVID-19 patients last week than they did a week ago, a USA TODAY analysis of US health and welfare data shows.
