Huntington, West Virginia (WSAZ)-The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many medical facilities to postpone certain medical procedures in order to preferentially treat people who fight the coronavirus.
This includes institutions that have suspended their early childhood immune programs.
According to Dr. Andrea Laufer, a pediatric hospitalist at Marshall Pediatrics, the organization did not discontinue the program, but she noticed a change during the pandemic.
“We saw a decline in patients,” she recalled.
“I think the family was afraid to come to the clinic just because of what was happening in and around the pandemic.”
She said her colleagues shared concerns about children who were missing vaccinations.
“They have always been a top priority for pediatricians,” she said.
“We were very concerned about the onset of the pandemic and the fact that many patients did not come to the clinic due to regular pediatric immunity during the pandemic.”
