Pay attention to outdoor mites | News and media

Residents of Saskatchewan are warned to watch out for mites when going outdoors this spring.
Mites are most commonly found in tall grass, brushes, or overgrown areas. They can’t jump or fly, but they grab people and pets that hit them.
“People need to be vigilant and check for ticks on themselves, children and pets after going out,” said Dr. Julie Krizanowski, Chief Deputy Medical Health Officer, Saskatchewan. “Taking precautions against ticks is the best way to reduce the risk of tick bites.”
To prevent tick bites:
- Wear light-colored clothing so that mites are easy to see.
- Wear trousers, long-sleeved shirts, and shoes that do not expose your bare feet.
- Pull the socks on the legs of your pants to prevent ticks from crawling on your legs.
- Use insect repellents containing DEET or Icaridin. Apply the repellent not only to your skin but also to your clothing. Always read and follow the instructions on the label. Some repellents may have an age limit.
- In Canada, clothing treated with the pesticide permethrin is approved for use by people over the age of 16.
- After going out, take a shower or bath as soon as possible to wash away loose mites and check for attached mites.
If you find ticks on your skin or pets:
- Carefully remove it with tweezers with a fine tip, and grab the tick’s mouth as close to the skin as possible.
- Slowly pull it up and pull it out with firm and stable pressure.
- After removing it, be careful not to squeeze it, crush it, or puncture it.
- Do not place petrolatum, gasoline or other harmful substances on the attached mites.
- Submit a photo of the tick using the eTick system and keep the tick in a safe container until you receive the identification result. Mites can be euthanized by placing them in a bag and storing them in the freezer for 24 hours.
Most of the mites found in Saskatchewan are American dog ticks. This species is active from mid-April to the end of July and cannot infect humans with Lyme disease.
The risk of developing Lyme disease is low in Saskatchewan.
Black-footed mites, which can cause Lyme disease, are rare in Saskatchewan, but are introduced by migratory birds in early spring and remain active throughout the fall.
Saskatchewanians can use the eTick online system to submit photos of mites found in humans or animals. www.etick.ca To receive timely identification of the type of tick attached to a person, pet, or livestock and information on the risk of exposure to tick-borne disease.
Keep the mites in a safe container while waiting for the identification result. The eTick administrator may require you to submit some mites by mail for quality control purposes or if the tick species is one of the medical concerns. Tick should not be submitted by mail unless requested.
In 2021, 969 mites were identified in Saskatchewan, with only 15 black-footed mites. Nine of these were submitted for testing, and none of them were tested positive for the bacteria that cause Lyme disease.
