DR Congo launches vaccination against outbreak of Ebola – Channels TV

The World Health Organization’s Africa office announced on Wednesday that the Democratic Republic of the Congo has launched a vaccination campaign after two people died from Ebola in the northwestern town of Mbandaka.

It is the 14th outbreak of the killer virus in Japan since 1976, and has occurred 6 times since 2018.

“Over the years, with the help of WHO and other partners and donors, the country has developed home-made expertise that can initiate an effective response to Ebola,” a statement from the United Nations Health Department. Says.

Approximately 200 doses of the rVSV-ZEBOV Ebola vaccine have been shipped from the eastern city of Sesame to Mbandaka, Equator, with more doses planned for the future.

The vaccination campaign uses a “ring strategy” in which all contacts of identified Ebola patients, as well as contact contacts, are jabed with the front line and healthcare professionals.

The first of the two confirmed deaths was related to a young man who died in the hospital on April 21st.

WHO said 233 contacts have been identified and monitored around Mbandaka so far.

A 20-bed Ebola treatment center has also been set up in the town.

Ebola killed 55 of the 130 cases enrolled in Mbandaka in 2020.

Since 2018, epidemics of Ebola hemorrhagic fever have occurred periodically in Equator from April to June, followed by Kivu and Ituri for several months, according to experts.

Last year, nine of the 11 cases in Beni, North Kivu, died of Ebola.

Ebola hemorrhagic fever is the first viral hemorrhagic fever found in Central Africa in 1976. The disease is named after the river in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, then known as Zaire.

Human transmission is via body fluids and the main symptoms are fever, vomiting, bleeding and diarrhea.
