Treatment of Parkinson’s disease
Greenville, South Carolina (WSPA) – April is Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month.
Almost one million Americans live with this disease.
60,000 people are diagnosed each year and there is no cure yet.
As part of the “Ask the Expert” series Bon Secours St. Francis7 News Anchor Taylor Murray talked to a neurologist about the treatment of progressive disorders.
Parkinson’s disease is a disorder of the nervous system.
“It is chronic and progresses slowly over time and can affect a person’s movements.”

Dr. Kathleen Woschkolup, a neurologist, states that the disease is common in the elderly.
“One of the biggest risk factors is actually age,” said Dr. Woschkolup.
Like actor Michael J. Fox, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at the age of 29, it is still possible to be diagnosed at a young age.
“I have a lot of patients in their 30s and 40s with Parkinson’s disease,” said Dr. Woschkolup.
Men are 1.5 times more likely to have Parkinson’s disease than women.
The illness itself is not fatal, but the complications are serious and can have a significant impact on quality of life.
“You can’t prevent it, but you can control it,” said Dr. Woschkolup.
In the early stages, it can be difficult to determine if you or your loved one has Parkinson’s disease, but there are some warning signs.
“I’m always looking for more progressive tremors or tremors. Balance problems, walking where I’ve noticed that I’m starting to slow down … I know balance problems, foot shuffle, and leaning posture. Whatever you see, you feel like you’re not working as before, “Dr. Woschkolup said.
If you notice any of these warning signs, it is important to contact your GP.
“The sooner they start being treated … they tend to get better in the long run,” said Dr. Woschkolup.
Little is known about the cause of Parkinson’s disease. There are no cures or medications that reverse the effect, but symptoms can be managed by medication, surgery, and even lifestyle changes.
“Exercise has been shown in multiple studies and data to slow the progression of the disease, and patients get better longer, so they will be able to start and implement these types of things sooner,” Woschkolup said. The doctor says.
Dr. Woschkolup says it’s a myth that everyone with Parkinson’s disease has tremors. Symptoms, severity and progression of the disease vary from person to person.
