Increasing COVID-19 cases in Pinellas causing concern: Coronavirus reminds public to stay safe

Clearwater-Pinellas County Commissioner held a special meeting on June 11 to talk about public messaging focused on the new coronavirus pandemic. The committee is concerned that the number of cases of COVID-19 has steadily increased and positive reactions have occurred in the last few days.

The Florida Department of Health reported the largest daily increase in Pinellas — 116 new cases — on June 11. So far, 278 cases have been reported this week, with 6 deaths.

County admin Barry Burton said the concern was not just the resumption of the economy and the expected increase in numbers as more testing took place, but more communities tended to spread. ..

From May 3 to June 3, the county generated an average of 27 new cases per day. However, from June 4th to 8th, the average increased to 54 cases per day.

Burton said he wasn’t sure if higher numbers would show new trends.

He said the number of weekly tests has reached over 2,000. For the past few weeks, the positive rate was the same, about 1%, but the positive test is about 2-2.5% and the daily spike is 4.5%. On June 11, DOH reported an average of 3.1% positivity.

“The trend is obviously not good,” Burton said.

He said the number of nursing homes is starting to stabilize, but COVID-19 is now becoming more common in the community.

The problem is what to do about it, and the best way to remind people to stay safe to protect themselves and others.

Dr. Ulyee Choe, director of the Department of Health in Pinellas, said not only is the number rising, but more cases are occurring in people under the age of 40, including those in their late twenties. And more colors are positive, with 24% being black and 11% being Hispanic. A slight increase has been reported in women, accounting for 57% of cases.

The new number emphasizes the fact that the virus still exists, he said. He said safer orders at home slowed it down, but prevention is still needed.

Choi said social distance is still very important. He recommends that people wear cloth masks, wash their hands often, and continue to disinfect surfaces to prevent spread to vulnerable people.

The vulnerable population includes people over the age of 65. People who live in nursing homes or nursing homes. People with chronic lung disease or moderate to severe asthma; people with severe heart disease, immunodeficiency, severe obesity, diabetes, chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis. People with liver disease.

Choi said that spreading the virus to vulnerable people is one of the things that keeps him going at night.

“One of the things I’m worried about is our youth and youth, who take them home to their grandparents or parents and they succumb,” he said.

He said employers should encourage employees to wear masks because only one employee with COVID-19 can have a significant impact on the business.

Dr. Angus Jameson, Medical Director of Pinellas County Emergency Medical Services, said the response is complex because coronaviruses are new and many are still unknown. He believes that face masks are a virus in the air and thus help prevent the spread of the community. He reminded the public that there was no vaccine or cure.

He also said that the main tool to stop spreads is to stay remote. The best way to avoid getting sick is to not breathe the air of your neighbors.

Currently, the hospital has sufficient capacity. However, it will take several weeks before we can see if the surge of new cases will affect local hospitals. Jamesson said people usually start getting sick 5-10 days after exposure. The disease is mild during the first few days before it becomes severe.

He said health care workers are getting better at treating illnesses, reducing hospital stays and deaths.

According to Jameson, hospitals have reduced staff because a pandemic has begun and people have stopped seeking treatment for other illnesses. Hospitals have struggled to keep staffing in line with the demand due to intermittent patient numbers these days. He said he heard some concerns about capacity, as not as much as some would want.

Commissioner Dave Eggers said he needs to send a strong message that the pandemic is still here. There are more unknowns than known ones. He is worried because people stopped practicing preventative measures right away.

“If you don’t worry about yourself, worry about others,” he said.

We want to focus on adopting a different attitude about wearing masks where people of all ages need to go to basic services, such as grocery stories and drug stores. He suggested that the store put signs encouraging everyone to put on a mask.

Jamesson pointed out that it is important that the mask covers the mouth and nose and fits well on the face.

“Otherwise it’s useless,” he said.

Commissioner Karen Seal talked about how some stores were doing business by requiring reservations and requiring everyone to wear a mask. Some people initially displayed the yellow sign that the Sheriff’s office first distributed, outlining guidelines for the Centers for Disease Control.

She said she saw a spray message saying she was safe. Please be kind. Get better She suggested putting it in a place like a soccer field. She also suggested that county ambassadors and celebrities spread the message.

One of the problems with face masks was that she couldn’t see the smiling person and encouraged those who wore the mask to “laugh with their eyes” or to thank them with their thumbs up, she said. ..

The message needs to be about new normals, said Commission Chair Pat Gerrard. She suggested a mask with the message “I’m wearing a mask because I care about you”.

Welch pointed out that the best messengers are young people. The commissioner acknowledged that the message needs to cross the county’s social media channels.

Jameson proposed a simple message to play off at home safely. Welch has made school more secure as he resumes the plan.

COVID-19 in prison

“There was a big problem in prison,” Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Guartieri told the commission.

He said 20 people, including prisoners and staff, had tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 48 hours.

He is making a “significant change” in prison. This includes not booking inmates except for serious crimes.

He said more was tested and the results are still pending. Prisons are currently well-equipped to isolate inmates. However, staffing is difficult.

For example, a record prisoner for three inmates had a positive response, so he had to send his shift all day back home for 14 days. Staff had to be reorganized to make up for those 30. He said the C barracks were closed and quarantined.

The sheriff’s office confirmed on June 9 that not only were prisoners’ record experts diagnosed positive, but prison social workers and two detention agents had COVID-19 and Dunedin’s North District. Announced that there was a patrol representative from the station.

The sheriff is worried about taking a new person to prison, so he asked the local police chief to reserve only serious suspects.

His goal is to “flatten the curve and slow it down” while continuing to test.

“It’s a concern,” he said.
