Los Angeles County COVID-19 cases are still high, yet another variant is on the rise
In pure numbers, Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer reported an additional 2,335 COVID infections in the county on Thursday. She said the average daily number of new cases recorded by the county over the last seven days increased from 1,261 last week to 1,764.

According to Feller, state officials estimate that BA.2.12.1 could account for half of all California infections within a few days. She said experts estimated that BA.2.12.1 was approximately 20% to 30% more infectious than BA.2.
“It could soon become the dominant strain in the United States,” Feller said, adding that the new sect was found to account for 58% of the cases tested in New York, New Jersey and Puerto Rico.
It is still unclear whether BA.2.12.1 causes a more serious illness or is more resistant to the vaccine.
The 2,335 new cases reported on Thursday raised the county-wide number from the pandemic to 2,869,785. Eight more virus-related deaths were reported on Thursday, increasing the county deaths from the virus to 31,959.
As of Thursday, the average daily rate of people who tested positive for the virus was 1.8%.
