Studies say that two Omicron subvariants can cause fresh Covid waves. ICMR clears suspicion of fourth coronavirus wave

South African scientists have discovered that two new sub-strains of the Omicron coronavirus variant can evade anti-COVID-19 antibodies and trigger new waves. However, its ability to thrive in the blood of people vaccinated against the pathogen is limited. Two variants (BA.4 and BA.5) have been added to the watch list by the World Health Organization. Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Research Council or ICMR states that the recent increase in coronavirus cases is not the fourth wave of the pandemic.
In a study of 39 participants, scientists from several institutions found that people vaccinated with Pfizer injections were better protected from the virus.
The vaccinated group showed about five times higher neutralization capacity … and should be better protected, “said a study whose preprint was released over the weekend.
In unvaccinated samples, exposure to BA.4 and BA.5 reduced antibody production by almost one-eighth compared to the original BA.1 omicron strain. Blood from vaccinated people showed a one-third reduction.
“Based on the avoidance of neutralization, BA.4 and BA.5 could bring a new wave of infection,” he added, according to news agency Reuters.
There is no fourth Covid wave
Talking to IANS, ICMR’s Samilan Panda said a surge was observed at the district level.
“Several surges have been observed at the district level. This is called a blip … Blip is confined to a particular geographic region of the country,” he said.
Panda also said that despite the surge, hospitalizations across the country have not increased.
Also, no new variants were found in India.
