Health officials are trying to identify the causes of cases of acute and severe hepatitis that have infected many children, primarily in 16 European countries.
Over 170 cases of acute severe hepatitis in children aged 1 month to 16 years have been reported in 16 countries, including 12 in Europe. Most cases have been found in the United Kingdom. Other infectious diseases have been reported from the United States, Canada, Israel, and Japan.
The World Health Organization reports that 17 children needed a liver transplant and one child died. Hepatitis in children can lead to chronic liver disease and liver failure.
Philippa Easterbrook is a scientist at WHO’s global HIV, hepatitis and sexually transmitted disease program. She said the cause of these infections in children remains unknown. She said the investigation showed that no child had a common viral cause of hepatitis A, B, C, or E.
“The questionnaire does not identify common exposures, such as exposure to toxins or certain foods and no strong travel history. And, importantly, very few children have been vaccinated with COVID. So it doesn’t seem to be related to the COVID vaccine, “she said.
Easter Brook says one line of investigation is to see if there is a possible link to the adenovirus. This is a common infection in children and can cause respiratory illness, gastroenteritis, conjunctivitis, and bladder infections.
She said that some cases of unexplained hepatitis in children occur each year in most countries. She said scientists are trying to see if the current apparent prevalence is really unusually high or if it is the result of a better report.
“In some countries where we were able to report this data with some confidence, it is suggested that the background rate is clearly significantly higher, but that is what we do in various ways. It’s something we’re trying to establish in the country, and we’re working together to investigate these cases and see if this is the case, “says Easter Brook.
WHO states that toxicology, immunology, and other studies will continue in the hospital. It points out that more cases may be detected before the cause of this infection is identified and before more control and precautions are taken.
