Laredo, Texas. (KGNS)-UNICEF and the World Health Organization are concerned that measles, a rare childhood illness, may be revived.
Health officials call it the perfect storm of situations that could allow it to come back in a big way.
The greatest risk is due to lack of vaccination. This is primarily due to the Covid-19 pandemic, where parents keep their children home or focus on the coronavirus rather than other infectious diseases that still exist.
Dr. Victor Trevino of the Laredo Health Authority states that he has never seen any cases, but he knows that measles cases occur more frequently.
Dr. Trebino said: People sometimes think, “Oh, it’s sick, it’ll pass by, and just take the child home.” However, there are cases where measles becomes complicated. A few years ago, I saw a child who actually died from a complication of measles. So whenever parents see a problem with their child’s illness, measles, rash, or something that looks like a fever, take the child to a doctor to see them. “
By 2020, 23 million children had missed basic childhood vaccines through regular medical services, according to UNICEF.
This is the largest number of unvaccinated children since 2009.
