Doctor confirms first Zika virus case of baby born in Ireland
Health officials at the Dublin Maternity Hospital confirmed that a baby was born in Ireland with the congenital Zika virus, the first and only case of the virus ever diagnosed in Ireland.
The virus was diagnosed as a girl 14 months after she was born, according to a doctor at the National Obstetrics Hospital in Holles Street, who writes for the Irles Medical Journal.
The paper revealed that the baby’s mother was traveling in her native Brazil during the first trimester of her pregnancy, and she developed fever and muscle aches.
The virus was found in the mother’s blood 11 weeks after gestation, but disappeared after 31 weeks.
On the other hand, her daughter was diagnosed with severe microcephaly at birth-if the baby’s head was smaller than normal-the test was otherwise normal.

However, by the age of 14 months, the baby girl had epilepsy, visual impairment, and quadriplegic cerebral palsy with severe global developmental delay.
She now needs an interdisciplinary medical team to take care of her, According to a doctor from the Irish Medical Journal.
The baby was negative for the Zika virus at birth, but showed a number of virus-related symptoms, and doctors said her case highlighted a flaw in the Zika virus test in Ireland.
The World Health Organization declared the Zika virus a public health emergency in 2016 after an estimated 1.5 million people tested positive for the virus in Brazil.
