Melanoma occurs when melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment in the skin, are damaged, mutated, and begin to grow unsuppressed. Tumor suppressor genes are thought to regulate cell proliferation. If cells do not function properly due to inherited changes or other damage, they can grow out of control and lead to melanoma. The Mayo Clinic says there may be additional environmental factors that damage the DNA of skin cells and cause melanoma, but the cause of cell damage is not always clear. Mucosal melanoma is a rare form of melanoma that accounts for about 1 percent of all cases.
