The highest mortality rate from uterine cancer among black women – NBC10 Philadelphia
A rare but aggressive type of uterine cancer appears to be driving an increase in US deaths from the disease, especially among black women, researchers reported Thursday.
According to their study, over eight years, aggressive-type deaths increased by 2.7% annually, while non-aggressive-type deaths were stable. Black women were the more aggressive type, with uterine cancer mortality more than doubled overall when compared to other racial and ethnic groups.
An aggressive type called type 2 endometrial cancer is more difficult to treat. By the end of the study period, it accounted for about 20% of cases and 45% of deaths.
“Most cancers have improved over the last two decades. It’s alarming that we haven’t had similar success with uterine cancer,” said MD Anderson of Houston, who was not involved in the study. Dr. Pamela Soliman of the Cancer Center said.
“This allows us to focus on specific areas that can have a significant impact on mortality,” says Soliman.
An estimated 65,950 new cases of uterine cancer have been diagnosed in the United States this year, and 12,550 women are expected to die of uterine cancer. Irregular bleeding can be a sign of warning, but there are no recommended screening tests.
Researchers analyzed US cancer data for women over the age of 40. They found that overall uterine cancer mortality increased by 1.8% each year from 2010 to 2017.
The annual rate increased by 3.4% for Asian women, 3.5% for black women, 6.7% for Hispanic women, and 1.5% for white women. (Researchers have adjusted for different race rates of hysterectomy. Women who have had their uterus removed do not get uterine cancer.)
Obesity is a less advanced risk factor for uterine cancer, but there are no clear risk factors for more aggressive types, Megan Clarke of the National Cancer Institute, who led the study, published in the journal JAMA Oncology.
“We think it’s more common in black women and the population of all women is growing,” Clark said. “It’s very mysterious and worrisome.”
