Federal agencies are trying to figure out how many Canadians are suffering from a “long COVID” as researchers learn more about the mysterious sequelae of the virus.
The Public Health Agency of Canada and Statistics Canada have begun a study to gain a broader picture of how common it is for people to experience prolonged effects after COVID-19 infection. This can be difficult to identify and even more difficult to track.
“We expect the impact of a long COVID to be significant,” Theresa Tam, Chief Public Health Commissioner, said in a media briefing on Friday.
The effects of long COVID, also known as the post-COVID-19 condition, are relatively little known, including diagnostic methods.
The Public Health Service says there have been reports of more than 100 symptoms associated with this condition.
According to PHAC, the most common are fatigue, memory loss, anxiety, depression, and even post-traumatic stress disorder.
Coupled with the variety of symptoms and the fact that few jurisdictions offer documented COVID-19 testing, it is difficult to know how many people are still affected by the infection.
Early reports from the World Health Organization show that 10-20% of people infected with the virus continue to have long COVID symptoms. According to Tam, this number could actually be as high as 50 percent, according to the latest research.
“Long COVID symptoms can be very widespread and non-specific, so some questions and questionnaires can lead to different answers,” says Tam.
This study is expected to help public health authorities broadly understand the number of people dealing with long COVIDs and determine if a particular region or part of the population has been hit harder. ..
Tam said there is new evidence that the COVID-19 vaccine provides some protection against long-term COVID, but their research is still underway.
