San Diego Covid Cases Increase Again – NBC7 San Diego
The number and rate of positive Covid cases in San Diego County increased last week. Last week there were just over 4,000 positive cases in the county, but last week there were just under 3,000 positive cases. Dr. Wilma Uten, a county public health officer, says the number of cases is probably just the tip of the iceberg, as many San Diego people are testing themselves at home.
“These numbers are even higher than we’re actually seeing because they haven’t been reported to the county, so we have a test kit at home and additional people say they’re positive because the test returned positive. It’s because we’re diagnosing. It’s a number we can’t see unless someone happens to get a PCR for confirmation. ”
Medical experts attribute the increase in cases to Easter gatherings, graduation ceremonies, proms, and seasonal changes.
UCSD Health scientists are testing San Diego wastewater for viral load in three different locations to help determine when Covid cases can surge. Dr. Christopher Longhurst states that viral load is on the rise. This indicates that the number of cases is also likely to increase in the coming weeks.
“Lower summer peaks and these antiviral treatments and vaccines are unlikely to tax healthcare system resources as they did in the past,” Dr. Longhurst said.
According to county officials, the number of Covid hospitalizations and ICUs has not increased significantly at this time. They attribute this to San Diego’s high immunization and booster immunity rates, as well as those using antiviral treatment.
The latest county data show 914 new positive cases on Thursday, 697 on Friday, 632 on Saturday, and 516 on Sunday.
Anyway, medical experts say it’s important to stay vigilant, as there isn’t much research on the long-term effects of Covid yet. If the Covid test is positive, follow the CDC guidance and quarantine for 5 days. On the fifth day, the CDC is advised to take another test. If the test is negative, you will need to wear the mask for an additional 6-10 days from the second test.
Dr. Longhurst says it’s also important to take the test if the test reveals that you’ve been exposed to a positive person.
