This condition can be caused by many causes, but the CDC states that in the last six months there have been outbreaks involving children with adenovirus. Authorities said doctors are not currently aware of the exact cause of this new form of hepatitis, but some cases are associated with adenovirus.

“We’re trying to figure out if this is just a moment, or if it’s real and causing the rise at an alarming rate,” said Dr. Sara Hassan, a pediatric transplant hepatologist at the Mayo Clinic.
She said there are still many unknowns about the development of hepatitis in previously healthy children.
The CDC recently said it is investigating 109 pediatric cases of liver inflammation called “severe” and “unknown” hepatitis.
Dr. Thomas Boyce, a pediatric infectious disease expert at the Marshfield Clinic, said that parents should not be too worried about the outbreak so far, even if the child is infected with the adenovirus. But there are obvious signs to look for, when parents should take their children to a pediatrician.
“Symptoms will be common symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain,” he said. “So if they’re worse than typical, or last longer than you’re comfortable, I think it makes sense to have your child evaluated.”
He said the overt signs of hepatitis generally included yellowing of the skin and eyes, and changes in stool and urine color.
A simple blood test can diagnose liver inflammation.
However, Boyce said treatment options were limited if the child had hepatitis due to a virus or some unknown cause.
“Treatment is supportive,” he said. “So the kids are usually in the hospital and they support the liver and give them medicine to help it.”
Boyce said the child would probably need a liver transplant if the immune system couldn’t fight the root cause of the condition.
He said the hepatitis strain is not a common type, A to E.
Doctors aren’t sure if adenovirus will cause this condition, but he added that simple hygiene procedures such as hand washing can protect someone from adenovirus.
