Hamilton Public Health confirms cases of bird flu associated with dead vultures found in Dundas-Hamilton
Hamilton Public Health Confirmed bird influenza An incident related to the recovery of a dead turkey vulture in the Dundas region of Ontario. According to the city’s health hazard and vector disease-mediated disease program.
Supervisor Jane Murrell states that the discovery was made by a resident who submitted the carcass to animal services and then passed on to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative.
“Usually it’s a one-time event in an urban area where residents need to contact us, but in this case that’s exactly what happened,” Murrell told Global News.
According to Murrell, the city does not have its own surveillance program for cases of bird flu, strictly based on findings from residents, poultry farmers, or farmers of bird flu species.
She says it’s been nine years in public health and this is the first case of bird flu she’s experienced.
“It doesn’t happen every year, but it’s happening now in Ontario and the United States,” Murrell said.
“Therefore, we see multiple health units with positive cases.”
Bird flu has a high mortality rate, and birds in places where the disease does not die are humanely euthanized to prevent the spread of the virus.

Human illnesses are rare, but known cases include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose or stuffy nose.
Human infections can cause muscle and body pain, headaches, general malaise, conjunctivitis (red eyes), and shortness of breath.
Bird flu is not food poisoning and humans cannot eat poultry or eggs to get infected with the virus.
Murrell says that for the average Hamiltonian, it means not touching or handling birds that they may come into contact with.
You also need to properly clean your hands after touching the bird feeder.
Murrell says that residents should not be afraid of rabies animal attacks from infected birds, as pain does not change the behavior of animals.
