Outbreaks of hepatitis in children: CDC on symptoms that parents should look for
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to investigate rare outbreaks among children and warns parents about signs of hepatitis.
Authorities said this week they are investigating 109 cases of hepatitis that have infected children under the age of 10. 90% of the affected children had to be hospitalized, 14% had liver transplants and 5 children died. More than 340 possible cases have been reported in 20 countries worldwide.
According to the CDC, the cause of the reported cases is unknown, but some children with hepatitis also carry the potentially causative virus, adenovirus type 41. With diarrhea, vomiting, fever and often respiratory symptoms.

The first cluster of nine cases was reported in Alabama in October 2021. All children in Alabama were 1 to 6 years old and were all adenovirus positive.
Parents are advised to be aware of the symptoms of hepatitis in their child and contact their healthcare provider immediately if they have any concerns.
“Hearing about a child’s severe liver disease can be worrisome. If you have questions about your child’s health, contact your child’s health care provider,” said the CDC.
Symptoms that parents are advised to be vigilant are:

- Decreased appetite
- nausea
- vomiting
- stomach ache
- Dark urine
- Light-colored stool (poop)
- Joint pain
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin)
Keep your children up-to-date on all vaccinations.
Help your child take daily actions to prevent illness.

- Covers coughing and sneezing,
- Teach them not to touch their eyes, nose, or mouth.
