DDW: Antibiotics Increase Risk of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in the Elderly-Consumer Health News
Friday, May 13, 2022 (HealthDay News)-The use of antibiotics, regardless of class, is at risk of aging-onset inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), according to a study published during the 2022 Gastroenterological Disease Week. Related to the increase in San Diego from May 21st to 24th.
Adam S. Faye, MD and colleagues at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine in New York City evaluated the effects of cumulative antibiotic use, the timing of antibiotic use, and the association of specific antibiotic classes with the development of older-onset IBD. The analysis included 2.3 million individuals (ages 60-90) tracked from 2000 to 2018.
Researchers have found that the use of antibiotics is associated with an increased risk of developing IBD (incidence ratio). In general, estimates of efficacy were slightly higher for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The risk was highest in the first 1-2 years after antibiotic administration, but the risk remained elevated for 5 years.
“Antibiotic control is important, but absolutely avoiding antibiotics is not the right answer,” Faye said in a statement. “If you don’t know what you’re treating, be cautious. If the patient has an obvious infection and needs antibiotics, you shouldn’t withhold due to these findings.”
