Cases of Lyme disease have increased by 75% in Benji, Leelanau County over the last four years
According to the Benzie-Lelanau District Health Department, cases of Lyme disease in Benzie and Leelanau counties have increased by 75% over the past four years.
Lyme disease is a condition caused by tick bites and can cause a chronic debilitating illness that can last for months or even years. Symptoms include fever, headache, malaise, and rash.
According to the Ministry of Health, the risk of human-tick interaction increases as more people go outdoors in the summer. Adult mites, mite larvae and nymphs are most active during the summer, but are smaller than sesame seeds and are difficult to find.
Last year, the Department of Health reported 51 cases of suspected or confirmed Lyme disease.
“Tickes tend to live in wooded, hairy, grassy areas, but can spread almost anywhere by animals and people during this time,” said Sleeping Bear Dunes National Seashore Director. Scott Tucker says. “Even if you don’t think you were in a dangerous place, check for ticks often!”
The Benji-Lee Lanault District Health Department recommends the following steps to protect yourself from ticks.
- For protection that lasts for several hours, use a repellent containing at least 20% DEET, picaridin, or IR3535 on exposed skin.
- Wear permethrin-treated clothing.
- Look for ticks on your body, such as on your scalp or behind your ears. It takes 36-48 hours to infect Lyme disease, so remove it immediately if found. Use tweezers to grab the tick as close to the surface of the skin as possible and pull it up.
- Put the clothes in the dryer and heat them over high heat for 60 minutes to kill the remaining mites.
- Take a shower as soon as you get indoors.
