Marion County reported 558 additional COVID-19 cases this week
A surge in new coronavirus cases in Oregon during the week ending Sunday, an increase of 16.3% due to 9,418 reported cases. Last week there were 8,101 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Marion and Pork counties remain in the low community risk category, examining the number of cases and hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants and the hospital beds occupied by COVID-19 patients. The counties of Colombia, Washington, Multnomah, Krakkamas, Benton and Deshuts are now in the medium risk category.
The Oregon Department of Education and the Oregon Department of Health recommend that schools use stratified mitigation strategies, such as recommending or requesting masks before considering the transition to distance learning or closing schools. In Oregon, 32 people were reported dead from COVID-19 during the week ending Sunday. The week before, 26 people were reported dead.
Oregon ranks 20th in the state in terms of the percentage of people who have received at least one shot, with 77.9% of the population being vaccinated at least partially. The national percentage is 77.7%, as shown by USA TODAY analysis of CDC data.
In the week ending Wednesday, Oregon reported an additional 55,427 vaccinations, including 4,397 initial doses. Last week, the state received 51,937 vaccinations, including 3,979 initial doses. In total, Oregon reported that it administered a total dose of 7,803,785.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 738,830 people have been coronavirus-positive and 7,560 have died of the disease in Oregon, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In the United States, 82,468,606 people are positive and 999,602 are dead.

Oregon COVID-19 hospitalization increased

Hospitals in 45 states reported more COVID-19 patients than they did a week ago, while hospitals in 29 states had more COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit. Hospitals in 41 states received more COVID-19 patients in the week more recent than last week, a USA TODAY analysis of US health and welfare data shows.
