Breast cancer “metal detectors” can be used on the NHS

A Breast cancer Detection tools likened to metal detectors could soon be used throughout the NHS to help determine if a person’s breast cancer is widespread.

It is also expected that Magtrace and Sentimag can reduce the need for major surgery in some patients.

The magnetic marker fluids and detection tools recommended in the new draft guidance of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) help surgeons find cancer tissue and remove it without damaging surrounding health tissue. increase.

A new draft guidance from Nice recommends the use of techniques to determine if breast cancer is widespread.

A ferrofluid tracer, Magtrace is a non-radioactive dark brown liquid that is injected into the tissue surrounding the tumor.

The particles are then absorbed into the lymphatic system and follow the most likely pathway when cancer cells spread from the tumor and are trapped in the sentinel lymph node.

After injection, the healthcare professional uses the Sentimag tool. This tool moves over the skin, which emits sounds of different pitches as it passes through the Magtrace tracer, much like a metal detector places metal on the ground.

Since Magtrace is a magnetic marker and visual dye, the color of the affected nodes is often dark brown or black, which is also useful for identification.

Once the sentinel lymph node is identified, the surgeon makes a small incision in the underlying skin and removes the lymph node for a biopsy.

It is then sent to check for the presence of cancer cells.

If cancer is found, the surgeon may remove additional lymph nodes either in the same biopsy procedure or in a follow-up surgical procedure, Nice said.

This may be done during daytime surgery or may require a short hospital stay.

However, Nice said the use of techniques involving skin staining has “some side effects” that could affect future MRIs after using Magtrace.

The evidence presented to Nice suggests that this technique is as good as the standard method for detecting whether breast cancer has spread.

However, current methods rely on the dual technology of radioisotope tracers and blue dyes, a branch of nuclear medicine.

Nice said that because Magtrace is not a radioactive substance, the new technology is particularly beneficial to surgeons working in hospitals with limited or no access to the radiopharmaceutical sector.

It may also help reduce the use of radioisotope tracers.

Recently, there has been growing concern about excessive reliance on the transport of these isotopes from outside the United Kingdom.

“People with breast cancer want to know if their cancer is isolated or has spread to the rest of the body,” said Jeanette Kusel, deputy director of MedTech and Digital in Nice.

“The earlier this is established, the better the potential results.

“The use of Magtrace technology is another option for surgeons working in hospitals with limited or no access to the radiopharmaceutical department.

“The advantages of using this technology are that more steps may be performed, less dependence on radioisotopes shipped domestically, and less movement of people undergoing biopsy. included.”

Minister of Health Sajid Javid “We are always looking for innovative treatments to speed up diagnosis and improve survival. We will elaborate on our 10-year cancer plan scheduled for this summer. “

Magtrace costs about £ 226 per unit, and Sentimag probes cost £ 24,900 to buy.
