Colorado epidemiologist investigates mysterious hepatitis in children
Denver (KDVR) – Colorado public health authorities are investigating cases of mysterious hepatitis.
Cases of five children in the state were submitted to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for further review. These proceedings were filed due to similar reports from within the United States and abroad.
There are many types of hepatitis, and the disease is common in adults. Children can also suffer from liver inflammation. However, doctors are concerned that hepatitis will develop in previously healthy children.
“There is a potpourri of such causes,” said Dr. Reginald Washington, Chief Medical Officer at Rocky Mountain Children’s Hospital. “It is difficult to predict how to treat individual hepatitis cases. As a doctor, you cannot assume that you know the cause. You need to check the entire list. Is it an infection? Is it a bacterial infection? Is it due to a toxin? Is it due to a drug? “
Public health investigators believe that hepatitis identified in healthy children under the age of 10 may be associated with gastrointestinal-specific adenovirus.
“This is a commonly prevalent virus, but until now it was not known to cause hepatitis or liver problems in healthy children,” said CDPHE epidemiologist Dr. Alexis Brakov.
According to Colorado health officials, there is good news among the five mysterious incidents in Centennial.
“All those children are improving or recovering,” Brakov said.
Parents need to be aware that hepatitis in their children is generally rare. However, it is always a good idea to be aware of potential symptoms. These symptoms include yellowing of the skin and eyes. Flu-like symptoms have also been reported.
