Mozambique declares outbreak of Pakistan-related polio
Health officials in Mozambique declared an outbreak of polio after confirming that a child in the country’s northeastern Tete province was paralyzed by the disease.
Johannesburg-Mozambique health officials declared polio on Wednesday after confirming that a child in the country’s northeastern Tete province was paralyzed by the disease.
The case in Mozambique is the second case of polio imported in southern Africa this year, following the case found in Malawi in mid-February. This is the first case of wild polio in Mozambique since 1992, but cases associated with the mutant virus from oral vaccines were detected in 2019.
The latest case in Mozambique was found in a child who experienced signs of paralysis in late March, according to a statement released by the World Health Organization.
Sequencing shows that cases in Mozambique are associated with the polio strain that is prevalent in Pakistan in 2019, similar to the cases reported in Malawi earlier this year.
WHO declared in August 2020 that Africa is free of wild poliovirus, despite many countries across the African continent reporting vaccine-related outbreaks in recent years. There is no difference between the disease caused by the wild virus and the mutant virus from the vaccine.
“The detection of another case of wild poliovirus in Africa is of great concern, if not surprising given the recent outbreaks in Malawi. But it is how dangerous this virus is and how dangerous it is. It shows if it could spread faster, “said Matidiso Moeti, director of the World Health Organization’s Africa Department.
In response to the incident in nearby Malawi, Mozambique recently launched two mass vaccination campaigns in which 4.2 million children were vaccinated against the disease, WHO said.
Disease surveillance has been strengthened in five countries: Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Vaccination campaigns over the next few weeks are planned to reach 23 million children under the age of five.
Polio is highly infectious, spreads primarily through water, and has a significant impact on children under the age of five. There is no cure for polio and it can only be prevented by immunization. WHO and its partners launched a global polio eradication effort in 1988 and missed many deadlines to wipe out the disease.
