A Nebraska woman suffered a stroke over zoom and is now advocating awareness raising

Lincoln, Nebraska (KOLN)-May is National Stroke Awareness Month, and according to the CDC, someone has a stroke every 40 seconds in the United States. That’s why it’s important to know the signs that can save your life.
It’s been a year since Anne Walters Tillery had a stroke, and the path to recovery wasn’t the easiest, but a year later, she shared her story to help others. I’m continuing.
According to Tillery, May 18, 2021 started just like any other method by logging on to the Zoom call.
“It’s very unrealistic to have a zoom meeting with people I know, and I was talking, but no one was aware that I was receiving emergency treatment.” Tillerie said.
This zoom conference, which became part of her routine, will turn into a nightmare in just a few minutes.
“Alone in a remote room, I saw myself having a stroke,” Tillery said. “When I stood up, my left side was already paralyzed and fell to the floor.”
She was alone, so she had to use her phone to get help.
“I can’t put enough stress to carry your phone,” Tillery said. “If you didn’t answer the phone, you wouldn’t be able to contact the first responder.”
Tillery spent the next few days re-learning how to perform the most basic functions, such as grabbing, walking, and fully using the left side of the body. Her life-changing experience of her has now turned her into her advocate.
“It was less than five minutes after I noticed the first symptom that the stroke had already completely paralyzed my entire left side and the time was equal to the brain tissue,” Tillery said. “It’s important for people to take a little time to learn how to find a stroke, because the life you save may be yours.”
Her stroke also gave her a new outlook on life.
“Every day is a blessing like knowing that tomorrow isn’t promised,” Tillerie said. “If something really matters to you, date it, start planning and make it happen.”
Tillery’s message is to ask yourself what to do if someone gets first aid, even during a Zoom call. Knowing what to do starts with consciousness, and the American Heart Association recommends starting with the acronym FAST. Face sagging, arm weakness, difficulty speaking, time to call 911.
