Canadian public health agency reports new cases of unknown acute severe hepatitis in children

The Public Health Agency of Canada reports three new cases of acute severe hepatitis in children caused by the unexplained hepatitis virus.

Authorities are currently reporting a total of 10 illnesses among Canadian children, starting with 7 cases earlier this month. All affected children were hospitalized and two needed liver transplants as a result of the infection.

“Acute severe hepatitis in children is a rare condition in Canada, and the root cause or cause is often unknown,” read the PHAC statement.

“PHAC is working closely with state, territory, and international partners to further investigate reported cases of acute severe hepatitis in children not caused by known hepatitis viruses.”

The World Health Organization says it is investigating about 350 cases of unexplained hepatitis worldwide, with reported viral deaths in countries such as the United States and India.

PHAC says it currently does not know if new cases of unknown hepatitis have increased compared to the past few years, and is analyzing state and territory hospital data to better understand the situation. Stated.

Four of the affected children are from Ontario, three from Alberta, two from Manitoba, and one from Quebec. The children were 1 to 13 years old and became ill between November 2021 and April 2022.

PHAC and WHO say they are investigating adenovirus, a common virus that causes illnesses such as the common cold and flu, and gastroenteritis, as one of the possible causes of the disease.
