Corneal T cells protect the eye from viral infections, researchers discover-ScienceDaily

Released today Cell reportThis study shows that long-lived memory T cells that patrol and fight viral infections are present in the cornea, overturning the current belief that T cells are not found in healthy corneas and are an eye for infection. The team studied corneal cells in mice infected with the herpes simplex virus using a polyphoton microscope that provides live images of living, intact living tissue.
Their images revealed long-lived memory T cells generated in the mouse eye to fight infection. Memory T cells remain in the cornea after the virus has been removed, preventing future reinfection.
Advanced imaging of the healthy human eye also revealed immune cells patroling the cornea. This is the first image of the movement of cells in the human eye.
As humans can see, the cornea must remain transparent to ensure that focused light is received by the retina through the iris.
The presence of T cells in the cornea was not previously considered. The eyes only weaken the immune response to avoid inflammation that interferes with vision.
The lead author, Professor Scott Mueller of the University of Melbourne, and laboratory director of the Doherty Institute, said these findings have important implications for understanding how eyes can prevent dangerous infections.
“The current understanding that T cells are not found in healthy corneas needs to be reconsidered, as our findings indicate memory T cells that are present in tissues that enter the cornea and stay there for extended periods of time.” Said Professor Mueller.
“Our findings will give us a better understanding of how to protect our eyes from infections that cause permanent blindness, such as the herpes simplex virus.
“It also affects our understanding of chronic diseases, such as dry eye and common eye allergies, where unwanted T cells can also cause disease.”
This study was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Eye Examination and Visual Sciences and Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, University of Melbourne, and the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University.
