In her fellowship project, Dr. Fionama Clean of the University of Dundee will study the blood-brain barrier and how it differs in Alzheimer’s disease. The blood-brain barrier is exacerbated by illness, allowing toxic substances to enter the brain. Dr. McLean will investigate when and how amyloid accumulation disrupts the blood-brain barrier.
The goal is to find a way to reverse these changes in the blood-brain barrier and keep the brain healthy in the very early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
