California COVID-19 surged last week
Monterey County reported 902 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths last week. A week ago, it reported 738 cases and zero deaths. Through the pandemic, 97,095 cases of coronavirus and 737 deaths have been reported.
There was a surge of new coronavirus cases in California during the week ending Sunday, with 107,887 cases reported, an increase of 13.2%. Last week there were 95,266 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
California ranks 10th among the fastest-spreading states of the coronavirus per capita, according to USA TODAY network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data. Last week, cases of coronavirus in the United States decreased by 11.3% from the previous week, and 702,236 cases were reported. The national percentage is 77.7%, as shown by USA TODAY analysis of CDC data. The most used Pfizer and Moderna vaccines in the United States should be given twice at intervals of several weeks.
In the week ending Wednesday, California reported an additional 415,833 doses, including 65,747 initial doses. Last week, the state received 463,250 vaccinations, including 79,852 initial doses. Overall, California reported a total dose of 75,237,247 doses.
Throughout California, cases decreased in 18 counties, the most in Santa Cruz counties, from 1,089 a week ago to 550. In San Francisco County, there are 4,088 to 3,634 cases. In Alameda County, there are 6,268 to 5,878 cases.
In California, 255 people were reported dead from COVID-19 during the week ending Sunday. The week before that, 262 people were reported dead.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 9,557,802 people have been positive for the coronavirus and 91,299 have died from the disease, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In the United States, 83,984,644 people are positive and 1,004,733 have died.

California COVID-19 hospitalization increased

Hospitals in 34 states reported more COVID-19 patients than they did a week ago, while hospitals in 33 states had more COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit. Hospitals in 35 states received more COVID-19 patients in the week more recent than last week, a USA TODAY analysis of US Department of Health and Human Services data shows.
