Researchers discover how flagship proteins put protein production on track
Cells produce proteins like small factories.But if they make too much at the wrong time, it can lead to diseases like cancer, so they control production in a process called RNA interference (RNAi). Ago helps block protein production by finding, binding, and destroying molecules called mRNA-that direct cells to make proteins. However, the amount of Ago in the body is inferior to the amount of mRNA that must be targeted. Even after destroying one, a protein can find another, but without help, it cannot move on. Bibel has found a way for cells to use a process called phosphorylation to break Ago’s grip on an mRNA target and allow it to move to the next target. Bibel explains:
