Central Coast residents need to be aware of ticks this summer
People hiking and exercising outdoors need to be aware of mites this summer.
Mites are common in tall, grassy, and wooded areas.
Mites that dig holes in the skin can have far more serious consequences, including Lyme disease.
Tristan Sawson, who lives in San Luis Obispo, said:
“It comes from tick bites, usually bacteria,” explained Chris Ecker, an infection control and preventive physician at the Sierra Vista Community Health Center. “When the bacterium enters the bloodstream, it can cause a problem known as Lyme disease.”
The disease is less common in California.
“Lyme disease may not always be common here,” Ecker said. “It’s more of an East Coast, Upper Midwest type of illness.”
“When I talk to my doctor about this, it’s rare on the West Coast,” Lawson added. “You have to go to many of these experts about it.”
Although less common in the region, the disease can still be caught in the state.
“While this was happening, I lived in San Luis Obispo, and I was in San Luis Obispo for about six months before I experienced really terrible symptoms,” Lawson said.
Sawson says he suspects that the spread of ticks from dogs may have caused him to get sick.
“Even if I knew they had ticks, I always put them to sleep in my bed,” Lawson said. “I didn’t really know the effect.”
“Dog, deer, such things are big carriers of ticks,” Ecker said.
Prolonged Lyme disease can cause joint pain, malaise, headaches, and brain fog.
“The initial symptoms are usually a rash, probably fever, but that’s only about 80% of cases,” Ecker said.
Sawson says she experienced all the major symptoms of the illness.
“In a month or two, I hope I’ll be much better and never experience the pain of Lyme disease again,” Lawson said.
“The best way to tell if you have Lyme disease is to ask your doctor to test for Lyme disease,” Ecker said. “This is a very simple blood test. Let them know if you have Lyme disease in your bloodstream.”
Chemical repellents can be used to prevent tick bites.
It is recommended to cover the skin as much as possible to prevent tick bites outdoors.
If you find mites on your skin, we recommend using tweezers to remove them.
If you are bitten by a tick, it is recommended that you wash the area with alcohol.
If you can’t get rid of the ticks, see a doctor right away.
