Campbellton ER is preparing to resume after 10 days of shutdown
The Fredington-Campbellton Regional Hospital emergency room will be closed for 10 days and then reopened Wednesday.
The hospital was effectively closed, as at least 10 healthcare workers tested positive for COVID-19 and 30 had to be quarantined for fear of contact with the virus.
On Tuesday, Campbellton Mayor Stephanie Anglehart Pauline said he was reassured that the hospital’s emergency department was re-welcoming patients.
Vitalite CEO Gilles Lanteigne said at a public meeting today that most of its resources are concentrated in the Campbellton area-to support the outbreak.
The ER will open on Wednesday at 8am and will move to the next phase on Friday if the area is approved by the New Brunswick Public Health Service.
Patient visits, outpatient visits, and elective surgery may begin again on Monday.
“When a large-scale outbreak occurs in a region, we’re prepared to zoom in and do all the testing and be prepared to contain it,” said Brain Higgs. “Well, we feel we’ve done that. But shutting down the hospital in the process is not the place we feel the protection we need. So we need workers to keep coming. There is a need to protect the workers.”
Campbellton’s ER and other services had to be closed several times, even before the pandemic, due to lack of staff.
The Prime Minister said last week that 10 civil servants responded to a call to support the situation in the north-including from his office.

It has been deployed in a care facility in Atholville with at least 14 residents, and 6 staff have been diagnosed with the virus.
Lantigne said his forthcoming retirement on Tuesday. He will retire in October after working for five years as CEO. The network committee is now appointed to find his replacement.
