Studies have found that smokers are hiding cigarette packs with graphic warning labels in public.
US smokers who received a pack of cigarettes with a graphic warning label hid the pack 38% more often. Participants in the survey included 357 smokers living in San Diego who agreed to buy their favorite brand of cigarettes from the survey website. About 19,000 packs were delivered to the participants.

“Before the investigation, many smokers in the United States were reported to be discrete and hiding regular packs in public. Packs with graphic warning labels were packed before the investigation. During the investigation, participants were asked via interactive text messages if they had placed the pack in a location not seen by others in the last four hours. Changes in consumption and smoking status were assessed at the end of the 3-month intervention and at the end of the 12-month study.
Participants who received cigarettes in standard US packs or blank packs without marketing did not change the pack concealment behavior. Smokers randomized to the graphic warning label arm reported increasing the hiding of the puck in the first four weeks of the intervention and continuing at a new level until the intervention was completed. After stopping receiving packs labeled with graphic warnings, I immediately returned to the baseline pack hidden level.
When social reactions were questioned at the end of the study, the group with the graphic warning label pack reported that the observer had an aversive reaction to the tobacco pack, while the group in the blank pack group was the observer. Reported a positive interest in the study, the author said.
