Studies have found that smokers are hiding cigarette packs with graphic warning labels in public.

US smokers who received a pack of cigarettes with a graphic warning label hid the pack 38% more often. However, smokers stopped hiding cigarettes when they returned to regular packs without graphic labels, reports a multicenter group of public health professionals led by the University of California, San Diego.

Randomized clinical trials have shown that US smokers who received cigarettes in packs with graphic warning labels did not want to see the packs in public. It has been hypothesized that this behavior may reduce the perception of teens that smoking is socially acceptable, and perhaps the mandatory graphic warning label pack reduces teen smoking. Explains why it is related to. “

John P. Pierce, lead author, prominent professor of the Hebert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at the University of California, San Diego

In a paper published online June 2, 2022 at the JAMA Network Open, Pierce and colleagues at the University of California, San Marcos and the UC San Diego Gomua Cancer Center at the San Diego County Public Health Service described sick legs and respiratory tract. Newborns with, or cancer of the throat of an Australian cigarette pack (with permission from the Australian Government).

Participants in the survey included 357 smokers living in San Diego who agreed to buy their favorite brand of cigarettes from the survey website. Participants were randomized to receive cigarettes in one of three pack designs. A package with a graphic warning label, a blank pack, or a standard commercial US pack. About 19,000 packs were delivered to the participants.

Graphic warning labels are used on cigarette packs in more than 120 countries. Despite being mandated by the US Congress in 2009, the implementation of graphic warning labels has been hampered by legal objections by the tobacco industry.

“Before the investigation, many smokers in the United States were reported to be discrete and hiding regular packs in public. Packs with graphic warning labels were packed before the investigation. It had a major impact on those who were least likely to hide. ” Senior author David R. Strong, a professor at the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health, said. “We found no evidence that a pack with a graphic warning label changed smoking behavior in a year of research.”

Individuals continued to smoke as often as before and after the study.

During the investigation, participants were asked via interactive text messages if they had placed the pack in a location not seen by others in the last four hours. Changes in consumption and smoking status were assessed at the end of the 3-month intervention and at the end of the 12-month study.

Participants who received cigarettes in standard US packs or blank packs without marketing did not change the pack concealment behavior. Smokers randomized to the graphic warning label arm reported increasing the hiding of the puck in the first four weeks of the intervention and continuing at a new level until the intervention was completed. After stopping receiving packs labeled with graphic warnings, I immediately returned to the baseline pack hidden level.

When social reactions were questioned at the end of the study, the group with the graphic warning label pack reported that the observer had an aversive reaction to the tobacco pack, while the group in the blank pack group was the observer. Reported a positive interest in the study, the author said.
