Influenza symptoms in Colorado can be worse than COVID symptoms – CBS Denver

Greeley, Colorado (CBS4) – For the first time in decades, Colorado residents have seen a dramatic surge in COVID-19 cases in the spring, surpassing the number of infections during the standard influenza season in the middle of winter. According to UC Health data, Coloradans had a peak influenza season from late March to mid-April. This peak usually occurs around January.

“This is the weirdest flu season I’ve ever seen,” said Dr. Michel Baron, Senior Medical Director of Medical Prevention at UC Health.

In the graph provided by UC Health, the influenza season from 2021 to 2022 shows a big difference in the timing of the surge compared to the previous year. For the past few years, peaks usually start in December and decline by mid-February. However, although cases were seen in Colorado these months, the flu season was clearly at its peak in spring.

“There is no peak of influenza cases in May,” Baron told Dillon Thomas of CBS4. “Influenza tends to be very seasonal in terms of when we see it. We expect it to be seen in November, December and January when it peaks.”

Although unique, Dr. Baron said there may be an explanation for why the surge happened later in the season.
