Australian Bureau of Statistics notes increased deaths from pneumonia, diabetes and dementia in March Examiner Port Stephens

In the last week of March in Australia, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported more deaths from pneumonia, diabetes and dementia than in the last few years, and coronavirus may not be detected.

However, the bureau will call attention to the small numbers and will carefully monitor whether the increased deaths lasted until April.

The data show a sharp increase in deaths from pneumonia and diabetes, especially at the end of March. Both are strongly associated with COVID-19.

Diabetes caused 99 deaths in the last week of March-an average of 76 people over the last five years, 30% higher than that week’s average.

There was also a huge leap in deaths from influenza and pneumonia, with 76 deaths from these diseases compared to an average of 42 deaths over a five-year period in the last week of March of this year.

James Einston-Hinkins, director of the Department of Health and Key Statistics Office, said the increase was all due to pneumonia deaths and influenza deaths actually decreased over the year.

“By the end of March, we can see that the number of pneumonia and diabetes is increasing, which is obviously important,” said Eynstone-Hinkins.

“We can see the increase. We are paying close attention.”

But the numbers varied from month to month, including the lockdown itself, “there were many things that could have affected the death toll in the last week of March,” he cautioned. ..

“We need to really think about all these different scenarios before we can draw any conclusions,” he said.

The agency analyzed deaths certified by doctors-85-90% of all deaths-not going to coroners for investigations like accidents.

The cause of death is the cause listed by the doctor.

Overseas, a large number of “excessive” deaths in many foreign countries are believed to indicate an underlying level of undetected coronavirus in the community.

In Australia, Einston Hinkins said that fewer deaths were caused by coronaviruses and less by other individual conditions that differ weekly.

“We are looking into a very small number of different diseases and conditions, and we need to be careful about over interpreting these few,” he said.

Overall, 2649 deaths were recorded in the last three weeks. This is an increase of 5%, which is not an unexpected increase considering the population growth.

By state, there was no increase in deaths in NSW, with most cases of coronavirus and half of the official coronavirus deaths. Increases are in Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia.

Deaths from respiratory illness were 18% higher, with 270 deaths in the last week of March. Deaths due to dementia are high throughout the year, tracked well above the weekly average, peaking in the final week of 3 weeks, with 300 deaths that week being 24% higher than the 5-year average. It has become. But Einston Hinkins said deaths from dementia have been steadily increasing in recent years.

COVID-19 is listed as the cause of death for 89 registered deaths by the end of May. The agency said it exhibited most acute respiratory symptoms, including pneumonia.

Of the deaths caused by COVID-19, the data confirm that predominant deaths occur among people with underlying illnesses.

Over two-thirds (69%) were pre-existing. The most common is hypertension, followed by dementia, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. The significant impact of existing conditions has already been reported in health sector data.
