Medical research “destroyed” by Covid-19

The UK’s most deadly disease study has been “catastrophic” by the Covid-19 pandemic, warned by leading charities.

The Medical Research Charitable Association (AMRC) said medical research is hampered by the economic challenges posed by the coronavirus.

Spending on philanthropic research is estimated to drop 41% this year.

“Four and a half years is a long time for someone with a limited or short-lived life.”

She added: “I can’t start to express what this means for patients throughout the UK; waiting another four and a half years is the difference between serious and irreversible deterioration, or death. It’s absolutely catastrophic.”

At the end of April, nearly three-quarters (74%) of clinical trials and research funded by the AMRC charity were suspended.

The lockdown has been relaxed, so some have reopened, but the AMRC says some will not.

Dr. Scharmain Griffiths, Chief Executive of the British Heart Foundation (BHF), said:

“And we expect such a sharp fall could have a devastating impact on UK cardiovascular research.”

“I think the shockwave from such a reduction in funding for heart and cardiovascular disease is a profound, stalling advance in making the discoveries patients need urgently.”

BHF is currently losing £10m per month.

Cancer Research UK said the impact on cancer patients could be “significant.”

Charities say they could be forced to save £150 million annually from their research funding.

This could slow progress in the survival of cancer patients, he said.

Mitchell said: “We’ve been hit hard by Covid-19 because our funding efforts are so limited. We’ve done everything possible to limit the impact. But this funding gap Without a way to fill the gap, we must make a fundamental decision about reducing life-saving research.
