The first possible monkeypox case reported in DC
The first possible case of monkeypox in Washington, DC was confirmed in a resident who recently traveled to Europe.
DC Health said on Saturday that residents were confirmed to be positive for Ortopox, a family of viruses that include monkeypox. Samples were collected and sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for further examination and confirmation of monkeypox.
Infected residents are quarantined and close contacts are identified and monitored. No other cases have been identified as of Sunday, according to DC Health, and the risk to the general public remains low.
This follows the CDC’s established containment plan to limit the spread of monkeypox. The authorities’ current approach involves isolating cases, identifying close contacts, and ensuring that vaccines are available.
According to the CDC, about 25 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in at least 11 states so far, and no deaths have been reported.
The majority of cases in the United States have been found in men who have sex with men, but one has been identified in women with heterosexual sex life. The gender and sexual orientation of DC residents who tested positive were not shared.
Last week, the CDC said it identified a strain of an individual infected with monkeypox in the United States as a less serious West African breed. However, authorities swiftly warned against minimizing the risk of monkeypox.
Pathogen mortality is very low, but symptoms such as the rash that forms can be very painful and the lesion can leave a permanent scar. Other symptoms of monkeypox are like flu, such as headaches, muscle aches, and fever.
