Moderate to severe sleep disorders in patients with long COVID
Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic have found that more than 40% of patients with long COVID (COVID-19 or PASC acute sequelae) have moderate to severe sleep disorders.
The analysis also showed that patients with moderate to severe sleep disorders had a higher body mass index, were more likely to be black, and had exacerbated generalized anxiety disorder compared to normal to mild sleep disorders. After adjusting the demographics, black patients were three times more likely to experience moderate to severe sleep disorders. The findings were presented at the relevant Professional Sleep Research SLEEP2022 conference on June 6th.
The team analyzed data collected from 962 patients with PASC at the Cleveland Clinic’s reCOVer Clinic between February 2021 and April 2022. More than two-thirds (67.2%) of patients reported at least moderate fatigue and 21.8% showed severe fatigue. 8% of patients reported severe sleep disorders and 41.3% reported moderate sleep disorders.
