“Some of these medicines can exacerbate long-term COVID symptoms, and we need to be aware of that,” Anderson said. “This is a new variable that we are not used to in the field of mental health.”
It’s all still very new, and Anderson said this could be the most important point of all. He emphasized that long COVID patients facing a mental health struggle need empathy and verification and deserve it. Many, including Weishan, have found these through treatment and within OHSU’s long COVID support group.
“We know there was this collective common disaster,” Weishan said. “When I worked with them and listened to them, it seemed that we were all talking the same thing, but no one knew.”
For Waishan, it all points to a place where she can only expect to return to normal.
“My friend said,’Where have you been? We miss you!” Weishan said. “I miss her too. I miss her too.”
