The UK Health and Safety Agency said the outbreak was “disproportionately” affecting gay or bisexual men who had sex with men. In particular, anyone can be infected with the virus if they have close contact, including sexual contact, with a symptomatic person.

James said he was worried that the virus could lead to stigma of gay men.

Monkeypox is usually not a sexually transmitted disease, but it can be transmitted by direct contact during sexual intercourse.

It can also be spread by touching clothing, bedding, and towels used by people with a monkeypox rash.

James said he was abandoned by the authorities and was disappointed with the authorities’ response when they needed help.
