Highly contagious bird flu spreads in Pork County
Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been identified in a herd of 60 ducks and geese backyards in Pork County.
The highly contagious bird flu, known as H5N1, has struck the country since January, infecting millions of domestic and commercial herds and wild birds.
To date, nearly 40 million birds have been affected, with 369 outbreaks in 36 states, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to the CDC, this outbreak keeps the health risk of the general public low and poultry and egg products are safe to eat.
The owner of the pork county herd notified a private veterinarian after at least one bird died suddenly. Other birds in the flock also showed symptoms consistent with bird flu.
The veterinarian sent a sample of the dead bird to Oregon State University in Corvallis, which has returned positive. The United States Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Veterinary Services officially confirmed the incident on June 9.
In Oregon, outbreaks were reported in Linn County on May 5 and in Lane County on May 17.
The Oregon Department of Agriculture encourages backyard bird owners to practice good biosecurity and take steps to prevent bird contact with wild birds.
Symptoms of bird flu include diarrhea, impaired coordination, drowsiness, coughing and sneezing, and sudden death, but infected birds do not always show signs of outward infection.
The virus can spread in a variety of ways, including contact with infected wild birds and poultry, contaminated equipment, clothing, and caretaker shoes.
Flocks of backyards influenced by Pork County were known to mix with wild birds in nearby ponds, ODA said.
The ODA requires owners of birds that appear to be ill or who have died of respiratory or neurological disorders to call 503-986-4711 or 1-800-347-7028.
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife requires people who see sick or dead wild birds not to collect or handle them, but 866-968-2600 or [email protected]..
