To fight monkeypox, the federal government will buy an additional 500,000 doses of vaccine
Health officials announced on Friday that the White House has ordered more than 500,000 doses of a vaccine believed to be effective against monkeypox.
At a press conference, Dawn O’Connell, Assistant Secretary of Health and Social Welfare’s Assistant Secretary of Preparation and Response, announced that the United States had ordered a 500,000 liquid frozen dose of the Jynneos smallpox vaccine.
Currently, there are no vaccines or antivirals specifically designed to treat monkeypox, but the Food and Drug Administration has allowed Jynneos to be used in adults to prevent monkeypox infection. The drug was created by Bavarian Nordic, a biotechnology company headquartered in Denmark.
Orders announced on Friday will be delivered later this year.
O’Connell also said that Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) in the United States currently has 72,000 Jynneos in stock and is expected to arrive another 300,000 in the coming weeks.
Apart from Jynneos, SNS has more than 100 million ACAM2000 smallpox vaccines, but health officials say Jynneos is preferred. ACAM2000 is an old vaccine and has some side effects that may be of concern to healthcare providers, such as muscle aches, rashes and nausea.
At a briefing on Friday, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said 45 cases of monkeypox were identified in 15 states in the United States. It’s serious in recent American history.
Health officials on Friday also said that most patients who tested positive for monkeypox had a close and lasting physical relationship with others who were infected, consistent with the way monkeypox is believed to be infected. He said he reported contact.
However, some affected individuals report that they do not know how they got sick, indicating possible community transmission. The majority of cases are still associated with potential exposure while traveling abroad.
