Local teams say Covid kittens spread the virus to humans
Songkhla’s veterinarian was diagnosed with Covid-19 after being crumpled by an infected cat last year, according to a study by the School of Health Sciences and Medicine at Songkhla University, which is based in the School of Medicine.
This is the first documented case of suspected cat-to-human transmission, last week. Emerging infectious diseases Journal of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Researchers have found that cats are infected with two owners who tested positive. On August 8, last year, a 64-year-old father and a 32-year-old son were transferred from Bangkok to Songkhla University Hospital (about 900 km south of Bangkok) because the beds in the capital became unavailable.
Their cat slept in an ambulance bed for 20 hours. After the patient was admitted to the hospital’s isolation ward, the cat was sent to a university veterinary hospital for veterinary examination on August 10, and was found to be clinically normal at age 32.
During the examination, the three veterinarians wore disposable gloves and a N95 breathing mask, but did not wear face shields or eye goggles at the time.
Three days later, one person had a fever and was later tested positive.
The researchers found that genomic sequences obtained from veterinarians, cats, and their two owners indicate that the infection is epidemiologically related.
“In summary, we provided evidence that cats can infect humans with SARS-CoV-2 infection,” Thanit Sila, a member of the research team, concluded in the report.
Although the risk is low, researchers have advised caregiver eye protection during close interactions with suspected cats.
