Warm weather means an increase in mites

Columbus, Ohio (WXIX)-The Ohio Natural Resources Department encourages nature lovers to be vigilant this summer due to the increased risk of tick bites.
Mites can carry several diseases that are transmitted to people, and Ohio is home to three different species: the American dog tick, the black-footed tick, and the tick.
Types of mites
The American dog tick is found in the grasslands of Ohio, but according to the Ohio Health Department (ODH), it is the main method of transmitting Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
Black-footed mites can be found in 70 Ohio counties, including Hamilton, Butler, and Clermon. This tick is notorious for its potential to infect people with Lyme disease. Based on the data collected by ODH, there have been approximately 2,623 cases of Lyme disease after tick bites since 2012.
The tick was discovered in 1758, but was recently discovered to cause people with Alpha Gal Syndrome (AGS), also known as an allergy to lean meat, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (CDC) says.
What is Alpha Gal Syndrome?
The CDC explained that AGS is a potentially life-threatening allergy and symptoms occur when people with AGS are exposed to or consumed lean meat.
According to the CDC, common symptoms of AGS include heartburn, nausea or vomiting, heartburn, low blood pressure, severe abdominal pain, shortness of breath or cough, lips, throat, tongue, swelling of the eyelids, and dizziness. However, the symptoms vary from person to person.
How to avoid being bitten by ticks
The Ohio Natural Resources Department has some tips and tricks for those who still want to enjoy the outdoors.
- Treat your outdoor clothing with a permethrin-based repellent as directed on the label.
- Push the bottom of the pants leg into the socks or boots and push the shirt into the pants to keep the ticks out of your clothes.
- Wearing light-colored clothes makes it easier to find mites.
- After going out, check your skin and clothes for possible mites with your pet outdoors.
- If there are ticks, remove them with tweezers or a gloved hand. It is important to get as close to the skin as possible to remove it.
