I have COVID-19. When do you feel the worst and how long do your symptoms last?
Winter was once known as the season for coughs, colds and flu, but now we need to add COVID-19 to that list.
More than 7.3 million cases of COVID-19 have been recorded in Australia since the onset of the pandemic, and health experts expect more cases to be seen as temperatures cool.
But what should you expect while your immune system is fighting the virus? I had an infectious disease specialist disassemble it.
What are the expected symptoms of COVID-19?
According to health experts, COVID-19 has symptoms similar to those of a common cold or flu.
The Australian Government lists the most common symptoms of COVID-19 as follows:
- heat
- Dry cough
- sore throat
- Runny nose or stuffy nose
- Malaise
- Dyspnea.
However, there are some less common symptoms of COVID-19 that we should be aware of.
“Some of these symptoms may include, for example, diarrhea and abdominal pain,” says Paul Griffin, an infectious disease doctor and microbiologist at the University of Queensland.
Some of the less common symptoms that can occur include:
- Pain in muscles and joints
- Nausea or loss of appetite
- vomiting
- Temporary loss of odor and taste.
How much does my symptom get worse?
If you have the latest information on COVID-19 vaccination, Professor Griffin says you can expect the symptoms to be milder than in other cases.
“”[The symptoms] Usually less in both their intensity and duration [people] I have been vaccinated. “
“That doesn’t mean that no one has been vaccinated to develop symptoms and progress to a more serious illness, but vaccination significantly reduces that percentage.”
How long will my symptoms last?
Professor Griffin says there is no accurate timeline for how long you feel in the weather.
“Some people have fairly mild symptoms for a few days, but it’s not uncommon, especially for vaccinated people, especially for Omicron,” says Professor Griffin.
“And, of course, some people can progress to a more serious illness, some have what we call a long COVID, and the symptoms can last for months. I have.
“Fortunately, that’s not an expectation. It doesn’t happen to everyone, but it can happen.”
When do you feel the worst?
Again, there are no strict rules, but Professor Griffin says that people often feel that the symptoms are most severe somewhere between the 3rd and 6th days.
This is because there are usually the most viruses in our bodies around this time.
“Therefore, for most people, if symptoms develop and do not progress to a more serious illness or long COVID, it is in such a mid-term that people receive most of the symptoms and then begin to recover relatively quickly.” He says. ..
“Usually, most symptoms are expected a few days after a positive test, around the 5th or 6th day.”
How can I manage my symptoms?
Professor Griffin recommends that you follow the same methods you use when recovering from a cold or flu.
“Get plenty of rest, hydrate, and eat a healthy and balanced diet,” he says.
Medications such as paracetamol and ibuprofen can also help manage the worst pain and fever, but follow the instructions and take the correct dose.
According to current guidelines, positive cases should be quarantined for 7 days before recovering from COVID-19. That means you can focus on rest and recovery (and an excuse to uncover the TV show you intended to watch).
When should I go to the doctor?
If you have an underlying medical condition or are at high risk, Professor Griffin will contact your doctor or specialist to plan (if you haven’t done so already) as soon as the test is positive and the COVID-19 antiviral. It states that access to the drug needs to be planned. Drugs to prevent hospitalization.
“If the risk is high, these antiviral therapies that are given to people as soon as possible are most effective when given early,” he says.
But even if it’s not considered high risk, Professor Griffin says he needs to monitor the appearance of more serious symptoms.
“The main thing is breathing problems. If you feel that you are significantly lacking in breathing and find that you are doing less, you may have trouble walking upstairs or you may not be able to walk. There is a normal distance … [that] It will be a good indicator that it is a good time to be seen. “
“The main thing is certainly shortness of breath, to the point where people need oxygen, when we really need to be able to help them.
“So if you can’t do the usual things and feel short of breath, that’s certainly a good reason to be seen right away.”
However, Professor Griffin urges people to see a doctor if the patient is very ill and not to be postponed due to pressure on hospitals and general practitioners’ clinics.
“It’s important to know if people need treatment. There is certainly a way it can happen,” he says.
“There are many options for telemedicine, and there are many clinics where you can take appropriate precautions to see people.”
How do I know when I’ve recovered?
If you wake up and find that you feel a little brighter than the day before, you may be on your way to recovery.
“It can be a little difficult to understand because people are taking medicine to make them feel better, or it can be subtle when they first turn the corner,” says Professor Griffin. ..
“People can usually say that they feel a little better. Under viral weather, they can do a little more and feel a little sick.”
Do you need to worry if your symptoms are prolonged?
Professor Griffin states that after being infected with COVID-19, a mild cough usually persists for several weeks and becomes lethargic.
“It’s not uncommon for some of these milder symptoms to last for some time,” he says.
“After that, many people feel tired and exhausted for a few weeks.”
But if you’re worried about COVID for a long time, Professor Griffin says it’s best to consult an expert.
“Of course, if the symptoms you are worried about last for a long time, talk to your doctor to evaluate them.”
