Maintaining weight at an early age can prevent male infertility: Studies

Washington: Recent studies suggest that more careful weight management in childhood and adolescence may help prevent male infertility in later years.

Researchers will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Endocrine Society in Atlanta, Georgia.

The study found that overweight and obese children and adolescents, or those with high levels of insulin or insulin resistance, tended to have smaller testicles compared to their normal weight and insulin level peers.

She said the prevalence of male infertility has increased and, for no apparent reason, the average sperm count has fallen in half over the last 40 years worldwide.

Testicle volume (a measure of testicle size) is directly related to sperm count. This means that smaller testicles tend to produce less sperm. Up to a quarter of young men between the ages of 18 and 19 have smaller or smaller testicles than normal. This puts their future fertility at risk, Cannarella said. At the same time, the prevalence of childhood obesity is increasing.

“This evidence suggests a possible link between childhood obesity and the high prevalence of low testicular volume in adolescents,” she said.

To look for possible associations between low testicular volume and obesity, researchers evaluated testicular volume in 53 overweight children and 150 teens and obese. Their results were compared to 61 age-matched healthy peers. Normal-weight boys and teens had significantly higher testicular volume compared to obese and overweight companions.

The study also investigated the relationship between testicular volume and obesity-related metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia. Insulin resistance is a disorder of the body’s response to insulin, which increases blood glucose levels.

Hyperinsulinemia is an abnormally high level of insulin in the body. Children with normal insulin levels and teenagers had significantly higher testicular volume than children with hyperinsulinemia. Postpubertal teens with insulin resistance had smaller testicular volume than teens without insulin resistance.

“These findings help explain the reason for the high prevalence of decreased testicular size in young men,” Cannarella said.
