Bellflower mosquito samples are positive for West Nile virus
Mosquito samples taken from bellflower traps were tested positive for West Nile virus, public health officials said Monday.
The presence of West Nile fever in bellflowers occurs less than a week after being confirmed by public health authorities. Three dead crows tested positive for the virus of North Hills, About 30 miles from the San Fernando Valley. Positive samples confirm the presence of the virus in a population of mosquitoes in Los Angeles County, officials said.
“The West Nile virus spreads to a population of birds and infects humans by being bitten by infected mosquitoes,” said Steve Betrone, head of science and technology services, in a statement. “At this point, it’s very important to remember that the virus can be ubiquitous, even if it hasn’t been detected yet.”
There is no human vaccine against the West Nile virus, so public health officials say the only way to prevent it is to prevent mosquito bites in the first place. The CDC recommends mosquito repellents that use DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or lemon eucalyptus oil as safe and effective against mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes can also be reduced if residents eliminate pooled water and maintain proper pools, spas and ponds. Change the water in your pet’s dishes and bird baths on a regular basis. Residents can also request that mosquitofish be placed in an ornamental pond or report an abandoned pool in a local vector management area.
