WHO set up to determine if monkeypox represents a health emergency

London, June 14 (Reuters)-The World Health Organization will convene an emergency committee next Thursday to assess whether the outbreak of monkeypox is a public health emergency of international concern.

This is the highest level warning issued by a United Nations agency that currently applies only to COVID-19 pandemics and polio.

According to the WHO, there are 1,600 confirmed and 1,500 suspicious cases of monkeypox this year, with 72 deaths in 39 countries, including countries where the virus is normally prevalent.

Monkeypox is endemic in parts of Africa, but in recent months there have been more cases in both those countries and the rest of the world. The virus causes flu-like symptoms and skin lesions that spread through close contact.

According to WHO, deaths from outbreaks outside Africa have not yet been reported, but are considered fatal in about 3-6% of cases. The majority of deaths this year were in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

WHO Secretary-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said it was time to consider strengthening the response as the virus behaves abnormally, more countries are affected and international coordination is needed.

“I don’t want to wait until things get out of control,” said Ibrahim Sose Fall, WHO’s Head of Emergency for Africa.

Next week’s committee will be made up of global experts, but the WHO Director General will make the final decision on whether the outbreak deserves a label known as PHEIC.

Experts have urged WHO to take immediate action for several weeks following criticisms of the authorities’ initial response to the coronavirus pandemic.

In addition to COVID and polio, outbreaks of other illnesses, such as Ebola in 2014, have been declared PHEIC.

However, the committee can also stop issuing alerts. When the WHO Emergency Committee was established to consider whether the yellow fever outbreak in West Africa deserves the highest threat levels of the authorities in 2016, it finally decided to oppose it.

WHO’s decision that outbreaks constitute a global health emergency will help accelerate research and funding to contain the disease.

Tedros also said WHO is working with partners to rename monkeypox and its variants and work on a mechanism for more equitable sharing of available vaccines.

Some countries have begun vaccination of health care workers and close contact with monkeypox patients using the smallpox vaccine, a related, more serious virus that was eradicated in 1980.

WHO announced new guidelines for monkeypox vaccination early on Tuesday. FWN2Y10UW
