Alzheimer’s disease seminars provide caregivers with resources
Heather Bogdal’s mother, Janet Olsen, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016, but she did not immediately become a primary caregiver.
It happened in January 2020 after Bogdal’s parents came to Nashville from Michigan for a post-Christmas visit. Bogdal’s father, Olsen’s former caregiver, died suddenly while traveling. And Bogdal knew that Olsen couldn’t live alone in Michigan, so she and her family decided that Olsen would stay in Nashville and live full-time with them.
Similar to Bogdals, millions of people in the United States take care of friends and family with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia, according to Alzheimers.gov, a site managed by the US Department of Health and Welfare.
Raise awareness and change your life
June is Alzheimer’s disease and brain recognition month.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia and is a collective term for other cognitive abilities that are severe enough to cause memory loss and disruption of daily activities. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60-80% of cases of dementia.
There are seven stages in the progression of the disease, the final stage being fatal. Late-stage patients are often bedridden.
Staying healthy and active is important for patients with Alzheimer’s disease and may help slow the progression of the disease, some doctors say.
Since moving to Nashville, Olsen has been active in Fifty Forward, a day care service that allows social interaction and participation in activities. She usually spends three days a week in the facility and enjoys coloring.
“It’s like meditation. She’ll get lost in it,” Bogdal said.
Olsen is still independent in many respects. She takes care of Bogdal’s dog during her work, does her own laundry, and cooks after dinner.
“She’s the worst dishwasher I’ve ever had, but I love doing it,” Bogdal said with a laugh. “It makes her feel like she’s doing something important.”
Learn by doing
For Bogdal, he was not prepared to become a caregiver for his mother. She said it was a process she had to learn along the way.
David German agreed.
Linda German, a German wife who has lived in New York for over 30 years, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 62. He knew that the disease was fatal and that he needed help.
David German found it through the Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation (AFA).
“I really needed hope. For all caregivers, hope is the most important thing you have,” he said.
Linda German took about eight years to progress through the seven stages of Alzheimer’s disease. She died in November 2021.
Her husband said she couldn’t recognize it after all.

He also stated that the COVID-19 pandemic is a kind of disguised blessing. When everything shut down, David German was able to spend seven days a week with his wife. They were busy, riding in cars, dancing with them, listening to music, and remembering old memories through the thousands of photographs they had accumulated over 30 years of marriage.
David German also ate one of her favorite treats, Linda German Ice Cream.
“I loved her. I loved her until the last day,” said David German. She forgot my name after a while, but she was always smiling. “
David German is a volunteer and deeply involved in the AFA, helping the therapist overcome his grief once a week through the Foundation. Currently, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but David German recommends that patients conduct clinical trials to slow the progression of the disease.
He hopes that his story and volunteering will give hope to others who are caring for people with Alzheimer’s disease.
Resources for caregivers
For Germans and Bogdal, there is nothing more important than having a support system when working as a caregiver for patients with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.
“No one can go through this alone and say,’Yes, that’s a very difficult road,'” said David German. It will be. “
The AFA has several resources available to Alzheimer’s disease caregivers, including a 24/7 helpline with licensed social workers trained in dementia care.
“It’s all about connecting people with services and knowledge that can help them,” said Chris Schneider, AFA’s Director of Communications.
On June 15th, the AFA is hosting a webinar to educate Tennessees on the best ways to care for loved ones who may be fighting Alzheimer’s disease. Lynnwood, a certified dementia specialist and caregiver support coordinator for Mental Health America in the South Central, will be one of the keynote speakers at the webinar. She focuses on dealing with common difficult behaviors.
Wood wants people to be more active than responsive in dealing with Alzheimer’s disease. She believes that the best way for a caregiver to do that is to educate herself.
Wood also emphasizes the importance of being patient with patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
“No matter what happens, people with Alzheimer’s disease do their best at the moment,” Wood said.
The AFA Webinar will be held from 10 am to 12:45 pm on June 15th and will be open to the public for free. This is part of AFA’s 2022 National Education America Tour.
“Knowledge is a useful and powerful tool that helps us navigate through all situations, especially as difficult as caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease,” said AFA President and CEO. Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. said in a prepared comment. “It’s all about connecting families with useful and practical information and support that can help them now and prepare better for the future.”
